Beating up the Google bus (piñata)

Not that many folks seemed to come out for yesterday’s gentrification demonstration, although that didn’t stop those who did from beating down the Google bus piñata as promised.

I think the police were the most disappointed, as they had all assembled nearby, zip-ties and paddy wagons waiting for protestor violence that never happened. Don’t feel sorry for them too much though; at least they got a chance to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at nearby Pancho Villa:

Translating all that Craigslist rental jargon

It’s tough to find an apartment anywhere in the city these days, let alone the Mission.  And it doesn’t help that landlords will come up with every euphemism in the book to try to trick you into thinking their place is better than it is (not that they even have to given the fact that they’ll probably get 200 emails an hour after they put it up anyway).  Fortunately, our pal Teddy has taken all of the mystery out of rental ads to show you what they really mean.

Valencia merchants look to prevent Jack Spade from opening in Adobe’s former spot

While Adobe Books has fortunately managed to find a new home on 24th Street, the question of Liz Clairborne-backed Jack Spade moving into their former location still remains.  Among those opposed to the technicality-skirting men’s boutique is the Valencia Corridor Merchants Association (VCMA), who went to the Department of Building Inspection yesterday to log a complaint against the plans of Jack Spade to open up a 10th store on the Valencia Corridor.  Jefferson, Vice President of the VCMA, explains their case:

They had 7 stores when they applied for a LOD (Letter of Determination) from the Planning Department. Planning confirmed that they were not formula retail at the time but cautioned that if they opened up 3 more stores their status would change.

Next week the VCMA will finalize and submit a letter to the planning department to express the business communities’ opposition to their presence on the Valencia corridor.

Rumor also has it that Jack Spade craftily attempted to partner with Dave Eggers’ 826 Valencia in an effort to establish some neighborhood clout, but that the non-profit writing center turned them down.  It’s still too early to say how the city will respond, but could this situation unfold the same way as the Valencia American Apparel that never was?

Our pal Aaron noticed this happening across the street from his house, and it reminded me that damn, it’s been a while since I had a Bloody Mary at Pop’s Sports Bar. Perhaps it’s Bloody Marython season again!

Vogue’s hipster guide to San Francisco

It’s hard to tell whether or not the author is just trolling all of us:

Morning yoga in the Mission district followed by frangipane croissant and a cappuccino at Tartine Bakery, watching the hipsters heading to Dolores Park for a day of sunshine snoozing — and another perfect San Francisco weekend has begun.

I don’t even know anymore, so you might as well just go read it yourself.

How to make your own holiday wreath

Just ride your bicycle through a goddamn forest.

Still, I suppose this isn’t as bad as the last ridiculous thing that happened to my bike.

Thursday Night Live is back at the Eagle, this week with Luke Sweeney and Dreamdate’s Anna Hillburg

And it’s been back for quite a while now, too, starting with kickoff show over a month ago with our friends Reliics and going strong ever since, urinal troughs and all.  This week is no exception either, as our pals Anna Hilburg and Luke Sweeney offer a calmer yet no less poignant view of things.

Can’t wait to see the Oh Sees here again!
