Third annual 20th Street Block Party is this weekend!

This year’s 20th Street Block Party is looking bigger and better than ever:

Noise Pop and Ne Timeas Restaurant Group are proud to present the third annual 20th Street Block Party on Saturday, September 12, 2015.

The 20th Street corridor will be transformed into a free party to showcase and celebrate a diverse neighborhood that blends modern ideas with community traditions to create a new San Francisco experience. This free, delicious summer feast and dance party will feature some of the city’s best restaurants, local businesses and artisans as well as a variety of indie bands and DJs.

As we mentioned earlier this week, the newly reunited Dominant Legs are playing (at 4:20pm, don’t be tardy), but there’s also headliner Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, plus Nick Waterhouse and a bunch of other acts. See the lineup and schedule here.

As for food, they’ve got workshops and specials and enough food-related stuff to pack your afternoon. Full (really long) list of food vendors and programming here.

And if all that music and food isn’t enough, there are some art installations and some DIY activities and live radio! Read all about it here.

Lastly, if you wanna really live it up, get yourself a VIP ticket (which includes private viewing areas and restrooms, free drinks and food, limited edition merch, AND a mixtape).

Halloween costume idea?

Or?

Reminder: DJ Purple’s songbook is *not* a high school yearbook

But haha nevertheless!

DJ Purple‘s world-famous “Dance Karaoke” party happens tonight (and every Thursday night) at Slate Bar here in the Mission! Peruse the dance-oriented songbook here.

Bubble Hockey League is back, and in the Mission this time!

Drinking in bars while playing miniaturized versions of your favorite sports is definitely one of my favorite things about being alive. For soccer fans, foosball. For tennis fans, ping pong. And for hockey fans, BUBBLE HOCKEY!

And for bubble hockey aficionados in SF, there’s the Bubble Hockey League, which has been on hiatus for a year or so now, but is coming back strong starting a week from today — and it’s in the Mission this time!

Here’s the official “about” blurb:

The Bubble Hockey League, BHL, is a competitive league of Bubble Hockey players who compete in weekly matches over the course of a season. Statistics are computed throughout the season to determine standings. Championships are played at the conclusion of the season to determine the best teams in the league. Join the league and get in the bubble.

It’s 110 degrees in the Mission right now

In case you missed Dominant Legs’ triumphant return last month, they’re playing again this weekend

At last month’s show at the Knockout, they didn’t take the stage until after midnight on a weeknight, and it seemed like a lot of working-stiff types didn’t stick around.

The band is a little different since the hiatus (as explained in this Examiner article), but it’s still Dominant Legs and it still rules.

And they’re playing this Saturday at the 20th Street Block Party! And it’s during the day! And it’s free! Here’s the lineup:

RSVP and invite your friends (and buy VIP tickets if you’re fancy).

CONTEST: Win tickets to Willis Earl Beal at the Swedish American Hall this Friday!

In case you weren’t aware, the Mission-based folks at Noise Pop have taken over booking duties at Market Street’s historic Swedish American Hall, and they’re doing a lot of cool stuff. (I saw Little Wings there a couple weeks back and it was tiiiiiight.)

This Friday, Willis Earl Beal is playing, and he’s got a new album out, and here’s a song from it:

To win a pair of tickets, leave an interesting Willis Earl Beal factoid in the comments section below. Winner will be decided based on merit, and notified asap. Contest ends this Wednesday at 6pm.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
