A peek inside the abandoned Tower Theater on Mission Street

Our pal Mike Keegan (the man who runs the formerly abandoned New Mission Theater down the way) stumbled upon an open door on his way to work today:

Construction crew said they were scoping out plaster removal, so I have zero idea what’s actually going on in there in the coming weeks/months/years, but the FOR SALE sign is off the marquee, as is that “coming soon: mission cinema school” banner.

Two-Lane Blacktop, one of the greatest movies of all time, screens tonight in the Mission

tlb4

And on the big (huge) main screen at the Alamo, in 35mm!! The screening is tonight at 10:10pm, one time only, and there are still some great seats left!

It’s a road movie, from the very early ’70s, and I think it’s best if you don’t know any more than that. Just go see it!

Go Warriors!

Planning Commission approves ‘largest housing development in the history of the Mission District’

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 9.05.50 AM

That’s the corner of 18th and Bryant, in the near future. The Chronicle reports:

The Planning Commission approved the largest housing development in the history of the Mission District Thursday night, despite over four hours of passionate commentary from residents and artists who said the project would continue to squeeze working families and artists out of the neighborhood.

Over the past year, the so-called Beast On Bryant at 2000-2070 Bryant St. has become a flash point for what most San Franciscans agree has become a crisis, the impact that an extreme influx of wealth and speculative investment is having on a neighborhood famous for its arts and working-class Latino community.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
