My Mission Playground at Adobe this Friday

With all the tech gentrification shaping the city lately, the Mission has become something of a playground for folks with lots of money, an artist Gordon Winiemko seeks to thoughtfully explore that with a new installation at Adobe Books:

For his first solo exhibition in San Francisco, Winiemko is channeling the indignation felt by many long-time residents regarding the new wave of gentrification into a playful, confrontational, and above all thoughtful meditation on not only what’s going on in San Francisco and the Mission in particular, but also the societal values that are fueling gentrification and income inequality across the country.

And, for the centerpiece of the exhibition, Winiemko turns the Mission into his own personal basketball court, drawing on sports as a metaphor for the “beat the other guy/winner take all” mentality that is imbricated in the American mindset

Give me a fucking (fast) break.

The art herd has become rather thin…

  3. Sam says:

Yea, I kind of like it. Though the playground analogy has been around for a while. People in the lower east side were saying that in the mid 90s, Brooklyn a decade later.

  4. Spots says:

    “imbricated”? fancy.

  5. Tuffy says:

How ironic that he’s an artist from LA.

  6. Pacific Standard Simon says:

    “tech gentrification”

I guess that’s one way of distancing yourself from people you don’t like who can also afford San Francisco rents or mortgage payments — just like you.

  7. Schlub says:

    How it’s spelled: gentechrification

It is interesting how desperate this guy is to prove his moral superiority. The techies work hard and produce stuff that society finds valuable (or otherwise there wouldn’t be any money in it). But rather than acknowledging that contribution, this guy has to disparage them as greedy, “winner take all types” etc. etc.
Sure I can understand why people are concerned about the changes to the neighborhood but the degree of jealously, moral preening, and just close-mindedness that infects these conversation is pretty remarkable.
I wonder what this guy has ever done for the neighborhood or our society.

The only thing techies work hard at is padding their own wallets at the expense of everyone else.

They also spend a lot of time being extremely hesitant car drivers, never taking the Box on a left hand turn. They have perfected being lame-ass bike riders -didn’t any of them ride bikes growing up in the midwest? The sanitary Milquetoastification of SF is now officially irreversible.
This may sound petty, but it’s the little things that matter out there on the street.

You kids sound pretty knowledgeable about stuff you wish you knew something about.

I particularly like the part about the “sanitary Milquetoastification of SF”. Tell us, when does your parole end?

        • Greg says:

It doesn’t sound petty, you just come across as being a little bitch.

Wow … just when I think I’ve heard every conceivable petty whine about tech. And I bet they put the toilet paper on the dispenser underhand instead of overhand, amirite?

          HAHAHA troll win

        • Lovely Bunny says:

It’s the techies that won’t pull into the intersection?!?! I had no idea. I assumed it was the acid casualties. I’m from Milwaukee so maybe my vision is clouded.

Wait – are we talking about Asians now? Wait – are we talking about women drivers now? Wait – are we talking about hijab wearers now? Oh. Oh! We’re talking about the empowered majority? It’s ok then – carry on with absurd generalizations. You tell ‘em! Yeah man – speak to power! Wow. I can feel the revolution coming on – and you’re… you’re Che Guevara!! You go, man!! The STREET man! Yeah, man!
