Boba Guys coming soon to 19th and Valencia

One of our rare high-school readers Asher (say, what do people who are too young to drink in SF do, anyway?) spotted this in a window on 19th and Valencia this weekend. Boba Guys is getting their own storefront. Renovations are under way and they are looking into an Asian-themed food vendor pairing.

Chamalyn, another boba place, previously occupied this space and apparently didn’t survive the competition. Judging from all the Asian ‘tweens I saw filing into Boba Guys’ current 18th st. location this past Sunday, they’ve definitely got the market pegged.

By the way, try their almond jelly in lieu of tapioca. It’s homemade, and it’s bangin’. You can’t make as good spitballs with it, though.

Last chance to nominate your 2013 Hard French King and Queen

The Hard French Winter Ball is rapidly approaching, and while there’s still a few tickets available, the deadline to nominate your 2013 Hard French King and Queen is tonight at 6pm:

We’re looking for extraordinary folks from our community who are smart, sweet, artsy, crafty, committed, bold, big-hearted, and of course, self-identifiably sexy and know how to shake their tail feathers!  Ultimately, it’s a chance to honor the folks who tend to put in more than they get back, to say thank you for being part of what makes our community so great!

Wait, you don’t even know what the Hard French Winter Ball is all about?  Well, just imagine 1000 folks from SF going down to Santa Cruz to party on the boardwalk at the Coconut Grove Grand Ballroom!  Check out all the details here, get your tickets here, and don’t forget to nominate those beautiful friends, lovers, crushes, and all-around heroes here!

Reminder: Consult the Mission Mission Event Calendar if you’re looking for something to do

Koozie Klub means you get to show off your klassiest koozies AND get $1 beers!

Now I just have to decide whether to bring my American Tripps koozie or my Bay Bridged koozie or my Mean Jeans koozie.

What a sight!

(The pudding was excellent too.) (From the kitchen at Dear Mom.)

Vietnamese-Cajun (???) crab feast this Saturday!

It’s a thing, apparently! The Rice Paper Scissors team explains the concept behind their next pop-up dinner:

Our next installment of Dungeness Crab House is inspired by Vietnamese Cajun seafood restaurants, popular in San Jose and Garden Grove in Southern California — cities with large Vietnamese populations.

Seems random, but like every fusion of cultures, there’s a backstory. After immigrating to the States, many Vietnamese families settled in the Gulf Coast, where “boiling points” or crawfish houses reign supreme.

Like any good New Orleanian, the Vietnamese also have an affinity for rice, spice, and seafood. Inspired by Creole cuisine, Viet-Cajun joints came to be — with an added Southeast twist of lemongrass, muoi tieu chanh (a lemon, salt, and pepper dip) and garlic noodles to go along with boiled crustaceans bathed in butter.

These restaurants are known in Vietnamese as “quan nhau” — basically, a restaurant where you can get crunked. [link]

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Evil Children and Partygoers

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Right around the end of December I went into Tiny Telephone to record a single with Big Drag. My photographs of Boo and Ashley are directly influenced by the subject matter of Nobuyoshi Araki’s early work found in Sentimental Journey. A friend gets me into the SFMoMa sometimes so I go there and hang around till it’s almost empty. Special shout out to the Christmas Krampus, scaring evil children and partygoers for all time.

Thanks, Joshua! Ten more shots after the jump:
