I direct the open-minded reader’s attention to this: Tranny Is Just A Word.
However, the use of the word “tranny”, in this case, just seems incorrect; the cartoon illustration seems to depict neither a trans-sexual or a transvestite but, rather, an ugly fag banana-headed person with eye makeup, facial hair, lipstick, square tits, and a huge bulge in a g-string. Sorta like The Cockettes, if you remember them, or The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, if you’re younger.
Seriously… IT’S A FUCKING CARTOON, with no apparent axe to grind.
I only know from the trans people whom I’ve interviewed while producing an LGBTQ training video for the SFDPH, but I am mostly told that “tranny” is hurtful because it’s “often the last word a trans person hears as they’re getting beaten to death or stabbed.” Also that “transvestite” is no longer used, and is seen as out of date. Though everyone admits that it can be difficult to keep up with the preferred terminology and that there is often no across the board consensus.
Words can definitely be confusing when you have an internal historical context longer than a half-hour.
Okay, I changed the title, and I apologize for my use of that word.

Seriously, the use of “tranny” is gross and genuinely hurtful to a great many people living in our city, some of whose situations are precarious due to the same social stigma that is being made the butt of a joke here.
The author of this story should apologize and rescind the story.
