Just had a jar of this golden ale made with rice, presumably to complement the quasi-Asian Namu menu. Magnolia brews some of the best beers in the city, so getting an exclusive from them is a pretty big deal. This bright, slightly bitter sunny-day ale is great for anyone who is sick of paying $9 for a 12 ounce bottle of Hitachino.

Beer in a jar is a good thing
Usually rice is to be avoided in beer. Budweiser et al. use it because it is cheaper than barley, but it adds basically no body so it makes the beer taste watered down.
“…is to be avoided in beer”? Oh, really, Professor Budweiser, et al.? Adjuncts (non-barley fermentables, including rice) are standard for plenty of beer styles, old and new. It’s true thy’re used to change the body relative to other elements of the beer–but the perceived effect (“watered down”) is a matter of overall balance. Cane sugar is almost 100% fermentable, but I bet you’re not complaining about it in your 9% saison on a hot day…
