That is a coleslaw sandwich with 2 slices of pastrami… I hate to say it, but the Mission needs to learn that 3 slices of pastrami does not make a pastrami sandwich. When I order a pastrami sandwich I’m expecting something like this:
Notice how there’s several slices of pastrami in said “pastrami sandwich.” It’s got a good helping or pastrami, 2 slices of bread, a splash of mustard and maybe some peperoncinis, done. For the love of god, ADD MORE PASTRAMI!!!
Most importantly, that’s hand carved. Slicer cut isn’t juicy enough. Wise and Sons is hand carved which is good, the pastrami is just okay, nothing exceptional.
I’ve eaten at every “world-renowned” deli in NYC (Katz’s, 2nd Ave, Sarge’s, Carnegie, etc) and I’ve got to be honest with you: I don’t get the whole no veggies on the pastrami sandwich thing. I know you want to showcase the flavor of the meat, which is definitely on point, but I really miss the textures and flavors that the lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles add. At least a Reuben has got the sauerkraut and cheese going for it. Just meat, mustard and rye bread is pretty boring in my opinion.
I’m kinda with you. I really LOVE the NYC style of pastrami-with-rye-and-mustard-and-nuthin-else with hella pastrami…for the first two bites or so. Then I’m dying for some vegetable relief.
NYC pastrami sandwiches are a twice-a-year thing for me. I can’t hardly fathom the pastrami hardcores who consume a sandwich daily-oy vey!
Best sandwiches in SF! (commence argument)

What he said. Slaw sandwich with pastrami garnish. Fuck no.

Yeah, this is spot on.

Slaw doesn’t belong on sandwiches.
Yes it does, but only as a garnish.
Can’t lie. Looks amazing.
The Refuge (down in San Carlos) makes the best pastrami sandwich in the bay area, Belgian Ales too!
Meat and dairy on a sandwich kills kosher. and coleslaw on pastrami is pretty sketchy too.
Meat and dairy make the sandwich.
Yeah, but only religious zealots give a shit about that, so fuck ‘em.
Mr. Pickles!
M&L market on 14th @ Market for pastrami. KILLERRR!
You can get a fuckload of pastrami from Safeway for 5 bucks — throw it on a bun and there you go.
I’d rather eat a coleslaw sandwich that a fuckload of Safeway pastrami.
Don’t complain to me, then, when you start crawling on hands and knees because you can’t raise up on two feet.
