Eater SF has a great quote from Little Chihuahua’s owner:
“Valencia Street is hot right now,” he says. “We’re excited to be a part of the energy.”
Indeed! (Sad to see the word “Urbun” vanish off the face of the Earth though. Not.) Read on for the full story.

Finally, a place to get Sangria.
I like the one on divis, but adding another casual Mexican restaurant on this block seems superfluous.
Would you say the same on Mission or 24th?
might as well open a coffee shop.
The Mission can never have too many Mexican restaurants. That would be like saying there’s such a thing as too much happiness. Viva!
Fuck, now where am I going to get onion rings?
Exactly.
I think Jim’s has them on the menu — never tried ‘em — and it might be worth looking at Burger Joynt again — they did some expanding of their stagnant men after Urbun Burger opened.

HA!
Welcome back Cranky.
I’m not back — I am on Tumblr, though.
giordano bros on 16th has decent rings. no burgers though.
Also: isn’t calling a taqueria “Little Chihuahua” kind of like opening a burger place and calling it “Red-haired Clown Wearing a Yellow and Red Suit”?
That took a second.. very funny.
Well done, sir.
or clown alley, my favorite as a kid
Clown Alley…inducing food comas since the 60s. It was super nice when they refurbed it into Pickles. Lame name, but I liked that short lived place.
these crackas have gone too far!
For shizzle
Just saw Allan at the LCD Soundsystem documentary, want to punch his fucking face. After reading this posting I just want to ride my bike to the nearest tattoo store and get
“URBUN” right on my forhead.
Dude, I’ll pay for it.
yeah fuck that guy…wait…who?
Ugh. I want Yum Yum back.
Me too.
Me three.
I want the little Latin breakfast spot back. What was it called, Sunrise maybe? Two very nice women ran the joint, one up front and one in the back. If I didn’t show up for a while and the returned, they go Oh Jack we missed you, where have you been!?
You mean Cafe Solar, where the Vietnamese place is now? I loved the potatoes with everything on ‘em. That spot used to be Subterranean Records.
We can all agree Urbun Burger sucks. We can also agree that Little Chihuahua sucks. Man, I’m really glad Panchitas now does streetside Pupusas. This is like Lil Wayne being usurped by Drake but having The Grouch make residuals of the deal.
I am seeing something less than unanimous agreement with your opinion that “Urbun Burger sucks”. In fact, they DO NOT suck, unless your criteria of suckage is “costs more than McDonald’s”. The burgers are prepared to order (make mine medium rare), they have a good variety of free condiments, a tasty selection of pay-for add-ons and, as has already been pointed out, delicious onion rings. Big hot dogs, too, and if you want to try a really good sandwich, the Grilled Deluxe (ham & 2 cheeses), with a fried egg add-on.
But even if everybody DID agree with you… a Little Chihuahua? Honestly? Right across the street from El Toro? Right down the street from El Cumbre and Puerto Alegre? Right around the corner from Pancho Villa? If they don’t have a secret weapon, they must have a death wish.
I agree with DJM 100%.
Also Taqueria Los Coyotes, across from Pancho Villa.
The first rule of Taqueria Los Coyotes is you DONT.TALK.ABOUT. Taqueria Los Coyotes.
The secret weapon will be customers drawn from Noe & NOPA who don’t feel like waiting at Tacolicious or Puerto Allegre. A classic pincer manuever!
Yea medium rare
+100 I live near Little Dog and not surprisingly, I never make the trip to buy their cabbage-laced white people burritos. However, EVERY time I am near El Toro I ABSOLUTELY must drop in for a bite!
are you guys all taking crazy pills?! TACOLICIOUS. fucking duh.
Yeah, Urbun was solid. Not sure who has a better, quick burger nearby?
I’ve never met a person who liked Urbun Burger, and their veg burger was not even house-made (it might have even been Gardenburger brand, which is proof a restaurant is not even trying). But yeah, something other than another Mexican place would’ve been nice.
If you don’t want to, you don’t have to.
i love that place.
Hopefully, it will make Tacolicious less busy, so I can get my $10 taco, tecate, and a shot of tequila faster.
it’s actually 4 tacos for like $13.
I’m still trying to make sense out of the Chihuahua menu, but it looks like: $10 for 4 with no protein, $15 for 4 with tofu, and $17 for 4 with carne asada.
Little Chihuahua makes an awesome black bean and plantain burrito that I’ve never seen anywhere else. Secret weapon?
Maybe a little too authentic? But then, in Latin America, it would probably be frijoles negro, platano, and loads of manteca.
What a crock! Across from El Toro and down the block from Poncho Villa and La Cumbre?! Buena suerte, little shitshack. Your burritos blow.
“Valencia Street is hot right now.” It’s awesome that these dudes have access to a time machine set at 1997.
+1000000000000000000000000000000
I’ll chime in and say that I really liked Urb Burger (although I never noticed that they changed the name). I loved the brioche buns, loved the onion rings, and always got a burger that was cooked right to my temp (med). Their Urban Blue Classic w/ union rings and a bottle of red wine was pretty much a perfect wind down meal after a long day at work. Now I’ll probably end up going back to Burger Meister on Church, which I don’t like as much but has the advantage of parking nearby.
I thought it was dope. Great buns, and really good milkshakes.
this reaction baffles me. one MORE crappy mexican place to pile on top of the dozen other crappy gringo mexican places on valencia and one less good burger place is a reason to celebrate? its a good thing to have food diversity.
FTW
41 comments on this subject and not one obligatory use of the term ‘gentrification.’ I’m proud of you guys.
Also, Little Chihuahua is not bad. The ingredients they use are pretty fresh compared to most spots. Good salsas. Deep fried tortilla chips instead of that salty bagged shit. Plus, it’s a “taqueria” that my girlfriend will eat at within walking distance. So, you know, hooray!
Compared to the neighborhood competition?
Compared to most taquerias in the neighborhood, yeah. I’m loyal to Buen Sabor, myself. But the woman is more health-conscious and has a more refined palette than me (and a semi-rational fear of amoebic dysentery).
Dump her.
I already gave her the ring.
An ONION RING!
har har
ugh. another overpriced gringo “mexican” joint. yay.
We LOVED Urbun Burger. Good burgers, yummy fried and salads. We walked down a lot from Church and 30th with two little kids and also took friends from out of town here regularly. We thought it was even better than the so much adored Barney’s Burgers in Noe Valley. Can’t believe there will be another Mexican place. How many Burritos can you possibly eat in a lifetime? Very sad to see Urbun is gone. Does anyone know why they closed or if they are planning to re-open at a new location?
