Hipster pickpocket

That’s him there (allegedly), in the Kelly Kate glasses and stonewashed denim. He and his crew were out in full force of the weekend, taking advantage of the hordes of people out celebrating Pride. Mo, one of his victims, tells her story (on Reddit):

The way he pickpocketed me is this: He came up to me, grabbed me from behind, and told me to take a picture with him. I didn’t know this guy, so this was super confusing, but he seemed like he was trying to grab my camera maybe, so I handed the camera to my friend, who then took the photo. Afterwards, he scurried off with his friends and me and my friend were left wondering, “wtf drugs was this dude on…?”

It wasn’t until a few seconds later, when another woman (who I didn’t know) came up to me and said, “I saw that guy take your phone when he grabbed you!” and I looked in my pocket and indeed my phone was missing. This was long enough that he had disappeared into the sea of thousands in Dolores, though a couple of my friends spent a while trying to hunt him down to no avail. [link]

Yikes. Another Reddit user recognized him:

Him and at least one other person used to run scams in the Union Square area. They would come in and grab large amounts of product to “purchase” around Christmas time. When they got to the sales counter they would provide a credit card and an out of state drivers license(it was from Hawaii when I dealt with them) a form of ID. When the card was run through the computer would kick out a number to call for confirmation and one of their friends would be on the other end and would give you a confirmation number. And for some reason any number will allow the transaction to go through. I loathe him. [link]

And yet another warns that he and his crew are potentially dangerous:

This guy and his shitty friends used to come into the Castro Chevron and shoplift everyday. His friend has lips tattooed on his neck. They are known to pepper spray you if you give chase. Real tough guys. :/ [link]

So the next time you try to take a picture of this guy and his cute outfit for your fashion blog, make sure you keep your valuables locked up tight.

(Thanks, Chris and Danyell.)

I didn’t have an elaborate scam pulled on me, but I was pickpocketed at Dolores on Saturday too. My phone was snatched out of my open (stupid, I know) bag, as I maneuvered through the crowd.

We should form a support group!! Seriously, all my stuff was lying on the ground while I was dancing for hours that day, but walking across the park was apparently danger zone.

And yet, you guys will bitch and bitch about people telling you about red flags on rape warnings.

Yeah, what’s up with the journalistic standard here? “So and so is a thief and an asshole, and here is his picture, according to anonymous sources X, Y and Z.” Even if the allegations are correct, this is not the appropriate way to handle it. (That type of Internet mob thing is classic Reddit-style behavior, but that doesn’t make it right.)

True story: this same guy stole my phone WHILE I WAS AT WORK at Westfield about 2 years ago. It was a kiosk and we were instructed to leave our valuables in the drawer under the register while assisting customers. He and his cohort came up and one of them distracted me, asking me to show him things on one side of the counter while one stayed on the other side and swiped my phone from the drawer. Fuck these scum.

Someone please tell me a story about SF police (not citizens stepping forward) identifying and catching a repeat offender. Does it ever happen?

Pretty dumb he had someone take his picture as part of his scan, way to make it easy for everyone out there to see what a scumbag he is.

it stinks that this guy has victimized so many and gotten away with these crimes time and time again. We often get calls from people only after they’ve been on the bad side of an issue like this because only THEN they start looking for ways to protect themselves. Wish they’d find us BEFORE they get robbed instead of after the fact, but therein lies the challenge of being a small entrepreneurial company in a crowded marketplace! Challenges aside, we’re here for you if you’re looking for problem-solving solutions that help keep your small valuables safe and handily ON your person and not in your pocket or purse (& in a place you might not expect). Helps you lose the worry…not your stuff. Super comfy and interchangeable, too. See what I mean at http://www.portapocket.com peace! ♥

An intriguing discussion is worth comment.
I think that you need to write more on this subject matter, it may not be a taboo
matter but generally people don’t speak about these subjects. To the next! All the best!!

Unfortunately a crowded event can be a pickpocket’s dream. I think this story confirms that you need to take a few small steps to both minimize the risk that you will lose your valuables.

If you are going to a crowded event make sure you only take the bare essentials, and ensure you have a closed pocket to put your items into.
