Here’s the reason for the distorted ratio of food trucks to people who would eat at food trucks in the Mission:
Currently, food trucks aren’t allowed to park within 1,500 feet of a middle school or high school — as several members of his working group have pointed out, that’s 500 feet more than the limits imposed on medical marijuana dispensaries. “This puts off limits huge swaths of the city, including most of the Mission,” Wiener adds, encouraging what he calls “overconcentration” of trucks downtown.
The quote is from Supervisor Scott Weiner, who is working on legislation that will open up more of the city. Personally, I’m conflicted, since food trucks are so tasty but have long lines of people wearing hats and terrible graphic design. Still, senseless laws are senseless, especially when they interfere with someone making a buck. What do you think?

Nice! We can finally have more food trucks than people who patronize them. San Francisco, I love you but you’ve become a caricature of yourself. Kind of like how when I was a kid, reality television was based on…you know at least an edited version of reality. Now it’s just bad actors acting bad.

There’s a new permit request up for a hot dog truck on Mission between 19th and 20th. I plan to visit it whenever possible.

if this is what he really wants, he should push for closing Dolores northbound between 18th and 20th Friday-Sunday and put the food trucks along the median

The analogy is ridiculous. My guess is the schools want to try and limit the trucks from poaching kids from school lunch or whatever.
The dispensaries can’t be entered by someone without a card or scrip, which is a barrier few school kids should be getting around. Not so for the food trucks.
Liquor stores are required to be buffered 600′ from schools. Public notice for a McDonalds (or similar formula brick and mortar fast food)would go 300′ from a site that could be right next to a school. Why not concentrate on upping the quality of the god awful crap that SFUSD dishes, rather than unevenly limiting choice?
I agree, which is why the argument is better by analogizing to brick and mortar fast food places that are way less restricted instead of pot clubs that aren’t similar to food trucks.

It does have to move away from the school during school hours. Not a full 1500 feet, but I’m unclear what their agreement was. There was a whole city council fight about it and everything. Exciting.

This whole “x distance from schools” thing is ridiculous and nonsensical. Don’t they realize that kids will inevitably walk past liquor stores, food trucks, etc. etc. on their way too and from school? Hell, it’s not like kids are allowed to leave during school hours to go pick up a 40.
How about repealing ALL of these laws instead of the one involving the latest fad?

I’m a small part of the streetfood hub happening at 11th and Harrison (old uhaul lot). Interesting part: there will be beer.
I find it hard to imagine being against food trucks. Its one of the few food businesses that require so little startup costs that almost anyone could start one. With that comes amazing creativity, experimentation and variety. Even if you don’t like most specific trucks, what’s not to like about the concept?
And even if you’d prefer everyone have to mortgage their entire life to start a restaurant, how is simply ignoring food trucks so difficult for you?
Or are you simply so style conscious that you have to dismiss anything you perceive as trendy?
