I don’t have time to write a story; just give me the tickets.
The moment I realized I love Jens was when my iPod (on random) played Black Cab while I was IN A BLACK CAB! Kismet.
(hint,hint)
The song ‘Sweet Summer’s Night on Hammer Hill’ was what did it for me. It starts off with,”Oh, I still remember ‘Regulate’ by Warren G.,” and has a chorus of, “bumba bumba bumba bumba bumba bumba bum,” – how could you not fall instantly in love with him?
The moment he showed up with white robe-clad lady friends as backing band at the Bimbo’s show many years ago.
Also, when he played a sample of “Give Me Just a Little More Time” by Chairmen of the Board in the middle of performing “Opposite of Hallelujah.”
Jens’ brilliant cover of Arthur Russell’s A little Lost did it for me. I had already played the original into the ground and Jens brought both versions back into constant rotation. Here his performing it with kalimba accompaniment!

when i learned to play “black cab” on my ukulele and then my boyfriend learned as well! (on his ukulele)
Jens shows love.
when I Saw Him at the Anti War Demonstration, obv.
I realized how much i like jens at the same time i realized how much i hate LA. flew down for the night to watch him play a free show at the mondrian hotel. they made us stand in a line to generate buzz for all the morons driving around trying to see which places were “cool”. little did we know that we could just walk into the door. i heard about 1.5 songs.
i emailed jens when i got back to sf and he emailed me back…
“I heard about it, it sucked and it didn’t surprise me.
i promise i won’t play exclusive shows at fancy schmancy LA hotels again. not my style.”
not only does his music rule, but he rules as well.
orrr go see Dreamdate at Thee Parkside that night instead!
That’s where I’ll be!
I remember the moment distinctly: I got a mixtape (OK: mix CD) from a dude I was into, and that tape contained “A Higher Power.” I listened to the song over and over again, and later, made out with said dude in the back of a snowy taxicab.
I will always equate Jens with his Bottom of the Hill show a few years back, where a bunch of plushies in fursuits were totally in love with each other and his music. Jens and his songs are so open hearted and cute, that scene was totally normal.
too late?
