Newly reopened Palace Steak House makes unfriendly corner friendly

We ran into our buddies Jen Gann and Andi Mudd at Bender’s last night and we were like, “Why aren’t you eating tater tots!?” And they were all, “Because we just ate at PALACE STEAK HOUSE, doy!” Then we said, “How was it? Wait, no, tell us about it later — in an email.” Here’s the email:

After work, we headed over to the newly reopened Palace Steak House. Due to the idiosyncratic dining-room design, we were denied immediate seating. The wait at the bar, however, yielded fruit. Perhaps because our party of three took up four stools (the fourth stool claimed by an overwhelming balloon bouquet), our waiter inquired about the occasion.  We admitted to a birthday in our midst, and almost instantaneously received two slices of cake. We nibbled these delicacies while sipping self-obtained cans of Budweiser. Both were encouraged.

Once seated, our party ordered without hesitation: three T-Bones, baked potatoes, and garlic bread. Everything was exactly as expected. Highly recommended.

And here’s a related IM conversation:

Jen: Andi and I just sent you an email.
me: Reading now.
So excited!
Wait, BYOB?
Jen: Totally!
me: Whoa.
Jen: They just whisper to you, “If the beautiful princess wants to drink…”
me: Whoa!
I love this place.
Jen: Yeah, it makes that unfriendly corner friendly.

What a review! Thanks, Jen and Andi!

You shouldn’t have mentioned they encourage illegal drinking.

    Link to the menu Allan?

    “Everything was exactly as expected.”

Umm, what was expected? Is it the same as the old Palace, or is it better?

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

It is definitely not the same, but I would say it is a worthy successor in its own right.

Any idea what the story is with BYOB? Can I bring my own wine and have them open it without a corkage fee? If so then they can count on a new customer. I’m a huge fan of steak places with no corkage and I think the only other place in the city like that is Hillstone (Houston’s).

    • TJ says:

OK, so according to the picture of the menu linked in Bernalwood’s post on PFSH the corkage fee is $10. That’s certainly reasonable, but not good enough to have me travel across the Mission (I’m up by 14th). That said, I’ll probably still try out Palace once.

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Right now they are waiving the corkage fee because they haven’t gotten their license yet. Once they are actually selling wine themselves, there will be a $10 Corkage fee, according to the menu.

BTW: Also no corkage fee at the Fog City Diner, just down from Houston’s.

  8. No, it’s not the same. Before steaks were less $10. Now it’s over $13 and they’re serving a wider selection of American foodz. I liked it when it was simple and cheap.

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

$13.75 for a steak dinner with garlic bread, salad and baked potato is still a bargain and a fucking half. It is also in line with the prices at the other working-class steakhouses in SF: Tad’s and the Geneva Steak House.

    • t.hanks says:

under $10 for steak at a restaurant is pretty cheap, might be why they had trouble staying in business. at the butcher shop a good new york steak can be in the $10 range, to get it prepared at a restaurant with all the fixings for $14 is still a pretty good deal.

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

When they closed a couple of years ago it wasn’t so much a case of “going out of business” as it was the two owners wanting to retire after running the PFSH since 1969.

prices aren’t that bad i think it’s like $17 for a t-bone at geneva steak house.
also wassup is there no yellow rice here?!

  10. Ryan says:

They’ll be out of business in no time if they encourage BYOB. Sad but true.

  11. Chalkman says:

my guess is that they are just doing BYOB until their liquor license comes through, fairly common practice….

Cheap steakhouses are for locals. Not lazy dicks from the burbs who don’t want to try to at life. Just thought i should make that point.
