Anyone with the idea to take advantage of one of the nicest evenings of the year by enjoying a relaxing margarita on the Latin American Club patio was in for quite the surprise last night, as a pop up fried pickle party was already in full effect, filling the sidewalk with festive pickled revelers. At the center of it all was this beige Vanagon (stocked with the most charming mobile kitchen you can imagine) from which exceedingly enticing aromas wafted.
Curious to discover what the fuss was all about, I soon learned that the young woman in charge was offering tempura fried pickles (!!!), so naturally I had to indulge. Served with spicy garlic aoili and spicy soy sauce (served in a cute little fish bottle), the soft tempura crunch on the outside mingled perfectly with the soft, hot, zesty pickle within. Garnished with some thin seaweed strips, it made for the perfect snack on a rare warm mid-summer night.

Holy shit. That is my kind of party.
Fuck yeah!!
That’s sounds so awesome!!
That was fun! FRYBABY will be popping up around the Mission again soon! Get yourselves on our mailing list to stay informed. http://www.fujibird.com
only one thing goes with pickle chips.. thats ranch.. fuck this chick and her nori.
I prefer mustard.
She came out in support of my art reception, which was the source of the raucous crowd at the Latin that evening. You could have come in and found out what was up and said a word about the new artwork on the walls… Lazy mainstream (sic) media… heh
That said, @Boo – you’re a rude ass person. The pickles were amazingly delicious the way she served them. Your pickle chips with ranch must be served with deep fried orio’s and chased w pbr… just sayin
Pickles are supposed to be juicy and refreshing. Adding a disgusting layer of hot, mouth drying, fried dough is the antithesis of refreshing. Yuck.
That’s crazy talk. The sweetness of the dough plays really well against the sourness of the dill. Fried pickles are delicious.
FRYBABY is popping up TONIGHT (june 22) in front of the Make Out Room During the Mcsweeney’s food journal launch! 7-9 pm
I would be concerned with sanitary issues with bootleg kitchens, but then again I do live and eat in The Mission.
Been done before: http://sfrepublic.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/kentucky-boy-cooking-pickles-his-way-to-stardom/
Just sayin…
wait someone’s made this food before?? how can anyone else ever make it? certainly you can think of better ways to plug your little website there . . .
some of the wonderful comments here illustrate just a what a chic, sophisticated, and creative neighborhood the mission has become. It must’ve been a real drag back in the day…..
viva frybaby!!!!
