New mural at Potrero del Sol will deter graffiti – or will it?

Says SF Appeal:

A community that came together to solve the problem of persistent graffiti at a neighborhood park celebrated the unveiling of a mural painted in the hope of staving off vandalism.

Potrero del Sol Park, which is a favorite among skaters and schoolchildren, is bordered by Buena Vista Elementary School and a building maintained by San Francisco General Hospital.

Taggers constantly targeted a wall of the hospital building, according to the city’s Recreation and Park Department. After hospital painters’ efforts to efface the wall were thwarted time and time again, the community rallied.

They rallied and came up with this pretty mural idea and got it funded and here it is. Buuut don’t those big, wide, bright white block letters look like they might be pretty inviting to taggers? Or is that the point? They’re daring neighborhood taggers to be complete and total dicks? So that when they take the bait, tougher measures later on will be perfectly justified? Or am I thinking too hard?

Read on.

Looks like it was unveiled yesterday. I’d be surprised if it’s not already tagged.

These people are mind-blowingly ignorant if they think taggers stay away from murals.

The background looks like Reyes’ colors and style,(haven’t seen a real pic to be sure), so that will go a ways in the respecto dept. There are many levels of honor among theives, however, and the super-ruthless will never give a fuck about how pretty they try to make this city – it’s a City and it’s more theirs than ours – deal with it, yuppies. It’s like marrying someone you’ll never change – best to just divorce the City and move on….

Our murals are boring. Our graffiti is downright dumb.

SF: where even alt is artless.

      That’s non-sense.

There’s plenty of great art. Boredom is within the mind.

I’ve lived in SF for over 20yrs and I’ve seen the art scene change so much.

I don’t know what you’re expecting to see, but maybe it’s time to take a better look at different areas of the city. Go art hunting. I’m sure you’ll find some really amazing art.

That Reyes dude already has tons of boring, bland, starburst looking murals around the city. Give it to a real muralist

      YOU’RE DUMB SHUT UP

      • I don’t care whether you shut up or not — rant for all you’re worth, if you like — but, having peeked at your Tumblr link, I’m surprised by the lack of self-awareness you evidence in your choice of the first two words of your response to the comment which you are replying to.

I would have thought that your response would have been something more like, “YOU’RE DUMB I WANT TO MARRY YOU”.

Nice to see more Reyes work up, his stuff is great.

    and yes, it looks unfinished.

Don’t bother…he doesn’t really care about art or the lack or style thereof. He’s just another in what seems like an endless supply of bitter, old, butt-hurt, boring, tech urchins trying to forge an edgy (reactionary) ‘personality’ from behind a keyboard on Mission Mission. I’m sure a lot of people don’t bother to read these comments because of this phenomenon. There are lots of other blogs that seem to attract a much less insecure group of people. Oh, and long live violent ugly graffiti!

        • Quin2013 says:

Yeah, I’ve been noticing people being very jaded to the world of what San Francisco is, particularly the art scene.

I’m seriously interested in finding out what’s in the mind of these people that think this way.
