Mission-style burrito wars heat up in Oxford, England

Last summer we heard all about some place in Oxford called The Mission Mexican Grill. Yesterday, word came down that there’s a new game in town (in Oxford). It’s called Mission Burrito:

These exterior pics are great, but what about the grub??

Some photos on their facebook page:

Also, their Yelp reviews are facepalm-worthy. Everyone seems to think this place is a knock-off of Chipotle!

I love burritos, and I have spent more than my share of time sampling different burritos in the Mission. I recently lived in the UK for 6 months (currently in Dublin) and I find it hard to take burrito places seriously (t)here, mostly due to the popularity of the “build your own” model. One of the great things about burritos in the Mission is that you basically choose your meat and the rest is left up to the chefs, for a good reason.

They have one in Toronto, too. Apparently not rad: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/mission-burrito-toronto

I just moved to England after living In San Francisco for 10 years. I will search this venue out and see how it fares.

I can’t speak for Oxford, but I lived in Cambridge in ’08/09 and there was a “Mission-style burrito” place there. It was horrible, and the burritos cost about $16.

In Cambridge? Where? Am sure it’s there just ain’t seen it…

Been a couple of years, but it was on Regent St, I think? Just down from the cinema, but on the opposite side of the street.

I know why do people do this? It’s like trying to buy great fish’n'chips in this country… Ain’t gonna happen, you’re just in for disappointment.

Burritos don’t exist in Mexico. So much for being authentic.

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

How do you figure that something has to be originally Mexican to be authentic. Mission burritos are authentic San Francisco food. We have every right to mock anyone anywhere doing them wrong. Arguably MORE of a right than we have to judge foodstuffs that WEREN’T invented here.

    • Uncle Roger says:

To their credit, they’re claiming San Francisco heritage — “from Mexico via San Francisco to the UK”. Says they spent a lot of time in the Mission and are trying to recreate that there.

  10. Uncle Roger says:

Looks like it’s the same company as the previous place mentioned (The Mission), just a second location.

Also, it’s not really authentic unless they offer Lengua.

  11. Tony says:

It is the same place as previously reported on (The Mission Mexican Grill) they’ve just rebranded. They also have sites in Reading and Bristol in the UK.

Can I get a plastic tortilla bag closure thing in my burrito like I did at Can-Cun?
