Anyone who traverses this segment regularly knows how hectic this connector between the Mission and Potrero Hill can be for cyclists, but it’s so nice to climb this hill every morning that I often take this street even though flatter routes like Harrison are available. Now, it looks like it will be a little safer for everyone! I noticed faint outlines last week, but this week it looks like they’ve finally gotten started. Bike lanes!
The bike lane side of the street going downhill is so poorly paved though that people still ride on the smooth car side. :/
I agree- I ride these lanes nearly every day, but I will always ride the outside of the bike lane or the actual car lane, as the roads desperately need new paving. It’s incredibly unsafe to go down a hill, on a rocky road and then halt to a stop mid way down for the opposing traffic.
Hopefully, they will repave the entire 17th st stretch in Portrero Hill (as it needs new paving from Portrero to Mississippi).

yeah, the asphalt on this stretch is rather shitty. but it looks like they are taking a piece-by-piece approach to putting bike lanes on all of 17th Street, and i’m all for it. hopefully they will time the lights for bikes as well, creating an incentive for bikers to ride 17th and cars to take 16th. this dynamic seems to work pretty well with Valencia and Mission.
POTRERO not PORTRERO! geez.
17th is very sketchy with all the traffic trying to avoid 16th street.
We rode 17th to and from Sunday Streets last weekend with our baby in the bike trailer and were so thrilled to see these new lanes being striped! Separated bikeways ( where possible) will be even better once we get them.
