Yeah, you, commuter. You’ve been passing this Explorist International place twice a day since October, and you always say to yourself, “Hey, I should go in there one of these days,” but you’re always in too much of a hurry. Right?
Well, tonight’s the night. At 7 sharp there’s a free jazz party going on. The core duo are a drummer and a vibraphonist I think, which should be dope.
At the last event, some random kid rolled up on a skateboard, pulled out a pocket trumpet and jammed on the last couple numbers, and then skated off into the night without another word. Rad.
And follow their blog for updates about hot deals and future goings on.
Far East Movement and Fergie mash-ups are the closest thing to free jazz coming out of clubs these days. Are people still listening to this genre?
dude that was one of the best shows i’ve seen in this city in a long time. So many saxophones creating these huge chords, I thought my head was going to explode in ecstasy. This wasn’t any of that “experimental” crap you see so much of in this fair city, the musicians were extremely talented and aware something so many musicians forget about, the power of restraint. Several times throughout the performance the listener could “feel” the performers working in tandem with each other, working their way around and through the improvisations. When there were solos, they only served to enhance the anxious and sometimes frantic mood created by the ensemble.
At one point a dog wandered in, the drummer paused to pet the dog and the other musicians sorta filled in for the missing beats only to have the drummer jump back in at the right moment, free jazz at it’s best. I really hope these shows keep happening!
*aware of something that….
