Guardian Angels increasing presence in the Mission

Better watch your ass, Mission District! According to CBS San Francisco, the Guardian Angels are coming out in force to help put an end to gang violence once and for all:

In an official statement, the Angels have said they’re working with police and are prepared to make citizen’s arrests when they see someone breaking the law.

Read on.

Hey, remember when they called Vic a pussy in a comment thread? I wonder if they were “working with police” on that effort too. And when they poured out some perfectly good beers? That was cool. Better not let ‘em see you jaywalk.

wait, so are you guys like ironically for them or against them? I think it would be totally cool if people would like, stand up against violence in the neighborhood and stuff.

    • MrEricSir says:

Bunch of white guys who look like they got beat up after school trying to show they’re not pussies by pretending to be cops.

Yeah, how could that POSSIBLY go wrong?

      • sfnola says:

Yeah, better to let more people keep getting shot and stabbed at 16th and Mission. Why bother trying to do something about it?

        • MrEricSir says:

In the unlikely event these wanna-be tough guys run into a gang, they’re going to get their asses handed to them. And who’s going to pay the ambulance bill?

We need real solutions to gang violence, not some jokers in silly hats.

  2. Hey guys. Just letting oy know I’m digging the site redesign!! Good shit!

  3. Brooks says:

but johnny, that would be like, helpful & involved or something… and mission mission can’t have that.

  4. MrEricSir says:

Whenever I hear “Guardian Angels” I can’t help but to picture Bruce Brugmann and Tim Redmond going around tagging utility boxes with “PG&E SUX.”

  5. chalkman says:

let them prove themselves by cleaning up Mission and 16th, by cleaning, I mean pushing brooms and powerwashers. If they succeed, then they can work their way down to 18th.

    • That’s been my mantra for years — anyone who really wants to serve humankind with their superpowers can start by picking up the trash.

    • whir says:

In fairness to them, according to their blog one of the things they do on patrol is literally clean up used hypodermic needles from Clarion Alley and the like. Which, love them or hate them, is a valuable community service which results in a definite, tangible increase in neighborhood safety for everybody.

The rest of their tactics I’m not so sure I’m on board with, but to be honest I’d rather have a bunch of bunch of dorkwads in red berets wandering the street and failing to intimidate anybody than a drunken mob of hipsters getting out of control and smashing up some random dude’s truck based on bad information about a bike theft.

chalkman if you doi it i will help you but if others do something and you don’t, well, f&*())

  6. Generik says:

The Guardian Angels = rodeo clowns attempting to be vigilantes. They should all wear greasepaint and red rubber noses along with those silly get-ups.

  7. void says:

These, of course, are the same dorks who try to force people to pour out their beer at Dolores Park.

  8. Trikle says:

Talk all the nonsense you want mission hipsters, But at least there are people willing to VOLUNTEER to put themselves in harms way if there is any.

Seriously why hate on these people, at least they aren’t preaching nonsense like WBC idiots, or trying to convert you. Let the do what they want, they as a collective do more globally then any of you trash talkers do locally for anything besides skipping showers and deoderant while crashing on peoples couches.

    • jooode says:

Agreed. I’m so tired of this neighborhood’s attitude. It’s like, if we take away the gang violence, then it may not be cool to live there anymore ’cause you’re no longer “tough”, or whatever it is going through the empty heads of these 20-something kids.

The hipsters treat the mission like it’s their playground. They don’t care what it’s going to be like in ten years, they won’t be here to find out. They’ll all have run back to the suburbs by then. I do NOT care what you are wearing, you are NOT cool, go back to your mommy and daddy and let the rest of the community try to repair itself.

      • Trikle says:

I was really enjoying the missionmission website, until i read this and the post in 2010, The people that write for this site give the illusion they give a shit about the community by posting related happenings in the mission, but when a non profit organization attempts to help the safety of the residents here they talk shit about them? Nice one guys, Lets see Vic go walk the streets like these guys do…

    • stiiv says:

      Here’s the problem. They’re a militia.

I like my police to be beholden, eventually, to me. We’ve got appointed officials, elected officials, oversight groups, and even the feds keeping an eye on our police. It’s not perfect, but it’s mostly okay.

The angels? They like to talk like police, use terms like “citizens arrest”, go on “patrol” and we’ve got no control over them.

So thank you for your volunteering spirit, but no thanks.

      • Trikle says:

I agree with the accountability aspect groups like this should have, but i dont think they come close to a militia type group. What they are doing is no different then what neighborhood watch groups do to ensure that the area they live in is safe which are also very common. If anything they were doing was illegal then this group would cease to exist all together.

        • stiiv says:

Ah, but neighborhood watch is one step removed. No direct confrontation.

The Angel’s rhetoric is part of the appeal. Without it, yeah, it’s just neighborhood watch and that wouldn’t be nearly as much fun.

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

What’s wrong with a Militia? As long as they are “well-regulated” they are explicitly protected under the 2nd Amendment.

  9. SCUM says:

I have never been into the GA’s, even stirring up shit with them back in the early 80′s on Broadway St. But if having them post up in certain high crime areas does something then why complain.

  10. carlos. says:

    fuckin NERDS!

  11. Kori says:

Why aren’t they doing anything about that bus stop ad?
    That movie was a crime.

  12. truth says:

Yes, none of the readers here who disagree with the GA’s tactics or motives help society.

Definitely not social workers or public defenders reading this blog. Just a bunch of smelly ass rich kids. It’s so much easier to think about things that way, right? The same way it’s easy to call GAs nerds and whatnot.

  13. Blake says:

A militia usually have weapons. I’ve never seen an Angel carrying an M-16 or 9mm. I love what one poster said. These Angels haters are hipsters who think it’s so cool to make fun of everyone else, yet they’re the ones who are the jokes. First of all, you’re not even true hipsters bc you don’t know the first thing about your own movement. You just dress the part like clowns yourselves and go around with that ironic smirk on your face. Since most hipsters are white it’s so typical isn’t it to be condescending toward people you don’t understand and whose skin color is different? Oh I’m so cool, I’m a hipster Mission Mission reporter and think everyone looks stupid and they’re so clueless and misguided and I’m so smart and wonderful I read esoteric socialist authors and Thoreau and I don’t know the first thing about wilderness survival but I’m just sooooo cool.

  14. taxi drive says:

to all of you who write about the GA, in the early 80′s a member of the group give his life to protect a citizen, now the question is: is anyone here will give his life protecting another one who you don’t even know? bunch of pussies go on the streets and do something, i don’t like the guardian angels but at least this wannabes do something for the comunnities..
