A touching moment occurred when these two DIY entrepreneurs crossed paths while in the midst of their rounds during one of the nicest weekends in the park EVER.  The gruff visage of Cold Beer melted away as soon as he noticed Warm Cookie Girl, replaced by an affable grin (and perhaps even a hint of blush–I think he may have a bit of a crush).  The two exchanged pleasantries for a moment before engaging in a friendly barter, with Cold Beer offering a nice cold one and Warm Cookie Girl reciprocating with a delectable morsel of her own.

They consummated their encounter with a friendly cheers (beer to cookie) before proceeding on their separate ways to satiate the needs of the Dolores Park masses.

Valencia Street is currently masquerading as a utopian state of bikes, children, bongo drums, and food trucks, and it’s your last chance to enjoy it until next season. Not to mention it’s 80+ degrees out right now, so come out and soak up what could very well be the last slice of our Indian summer!

Also, Mission Bicycle is giving out free bike check ups right now!

Our budday Malcolm, a connoisseur of all things Balkan, fills us in:

The great Mano Cherga Band plays tonight with Chervona, Makru Musica and DJ Zlejko from Kafana Balkan (late night set 1AM-close). For those of you who’ve yet to see Mano Cherga, this Serbo-Gypsy five-piece has the power to transform any venue into the homemade-vodkanol-fueled rural Balkan Wedding of the Year, 1990. You become the too-young sweaty groom; she becomes the too-young sweaty bride. Chances are she is a lovely link in the fairy circle of scarf dancing girls that seems to spring up wherever these fellows play. You have your whole lives ahead of you! Tonight the floorboards will leap, the chandeliers will swing, and temblors will pass unnoticed!

It’s 1938. You need to go shopping on the Miracle Mile but you can’t find parking between 24th and 25th. What do you do? Park in the Southern Pacific right of way, naturally.

That’s 24th on top, 25th down below, Mission on the left and Capp on the right. Rosamunde now sits in the west side of the former tracks, and Foot Locker on the east side. And Killing My Lobster is doing a kickstarter to open up their theater space just to the south of the old tracks.

Given the less than precise angles of the parked cars, the train was obviously not running frequently in 1938 (though I do like to imagine it barreling through and knocking cars asunder.) In fact, Southern Pacific would give up the line by 1948.  Note that the railroad was originally built in the 1860s and pre-dated the Mission street grid by a few years.  It took its jaunty angle to avoid two horse race courses that were in the area.

Hmm, just noticed the arches over 25th and Mission:

I knew there were iron arches over Fillmore that were torn down during WWII, but not on Mission.
