Haitian lunch menu weekdays at Bissap Baobab

Eater SF reports:

Madam Fofo, Djenane St. Juste and their family, who are part of the Afoutayi Haitian Dance and Drum Company, are now cooking up traditional Haitian food at the Senegalese restaurant Bissap Baobab in the Mission from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A taste of Friday’s menu includes pumpkin soup (also known as Haitian independence soup), crunchy fried plantain, fried pork (griyo), and coconut fish (Pwason Nan Sòs Kokoye). Vegetarian options are available daily and proceeds are donated to Afoutayi.

BART everywhere

What if BART actually ran everywhere you needed to go?  Imagine getting on the train in the Mission and going to grab some spicy noodle soup from the Richmond, then taking it to Petaluma to catch a show at the Phoenix!  Or going wine-tasting in Napa without worrying about a designated driver?  That’s the idea behind this provocative BART diagram by Jake Coolidge.

And as long as we’re dreaming, let’s get rid of the carpet, extend service to 24 hours, and have a dedicated bike car too!

Ty Segall lookalike (or Ty Segall) wanted

Somebody’s planning a pretty weird birthday dinner for a friend tomorrow. Here’s the full ad:

Ty Segall look-alike (north beach / telegraph hill)

Whatup y’all. We’re looking for a dude who looks like Ty Segall to come join us at a Thai restaurant for my buddy’s birthday THIS THURSDAY at 7:30pm in North Beach. See, he really digs Ty’s grooves, and we thought this’d be a funny idea. Thus, this ad was born. Offering $10, a meal, and a beer for an hour of your time. You can always stay and chill afterwards, BUT you cannot admit that you are NOT Ty until the hour is up. Dead serious.

If the real Ty Segall sees this ad, well, we’re down to throw you $15, a meal, and two beers. It’ll be SO rad.

Also, if you can bring a Ty Segall photo and “autograph” it, we’ll toss in another beer.

If responding, please send us proof of your Ty look-alikeness via headshot. The link below goes to GIS of Ty:

Again… this is for real, brah.

PS. UPDATE We don’t know if Ty has long or short hair… I’m pretty sure it’s short. I saw him at Brick and Mortar recently, but dude, I was fucking drunk.

Best of luck, all!

(Thanks for the tip, Scott.)

Mission Mission Gift Guide: Jewelry made locally with LASERS

Our pal Jacob recommends his pal Jessica’s jewelry. She’s based in the Mission, and uses a laser cutter based in Soma to cut the intricate shapes seen above. See her Etsy shop for lots more intricate shapes.

Breaking: house on shirt

My buddy Joan, who recently returned after a stint in L.A., immediately got to work putting her new apartment building on a shirt. I don’t remember exactly where it is, but if you recognize it you can stalk her, although she lives with her boyfriend and he’s a pretty big dude, so be careful out there guys. Otherwise just buy the shirt!

Google Maps, 1853 Edition

Hey, look, a map of San Francisco!

Waaaaait a second, something’s different about this. <insert Wayne’s World time travel music> It’s Google Maps, 1853! Behold PastMapper, an utterly epic work in progress on the part of @bradvertising, bringing the 1853 Coast Survey map to life and geotagging the 1852 city directory on top of it.

In the 1850s, the Mission was where you went to party and drink on the weekend. The Mission Plank Road (the curve of which BART follows today) was completed in 1851.

There was a toll — just 25 cents for riders on horseback, 75 cents for two-horse wagons, one dollar for a four-horse team! (What a bargain compared to BART or Muni.)

Well, not so fast — a dollar in 1853 was worth about $30 today. A glass of ale cost 12 and a half cents, and the typical fine for drunk/disorderly conduct was $5.  Needless to say, lots of folks hoofed it along side trails, cutting through the sand dunes and Hayes Valley.

Anyway, the 1853 is only the start for Pastmapper.  I have it on good authority that the much more expansive 1857/1859 Coast Survey map (with much more of the Mission) is on the to-do list.

Pastmapper: bringing you yesterday, today!
