Spider: Art Show & Music Video Shoot – Tonight! (Sat.)

Doc Pop is teaming up with Mission: Comics & Art for an art opening tonight (10/16) from 6-8pm, and while you’re gawking at his art, the Doc will use you for his new music video. Here’s the official explanation:

Beeps and Smudges is the newest album by San Francisco artist/musician Doctor Popular. For the album’s first music video, we are shooting in the gallery at Mission Comics and art, and we’d love to invite you to be an extra!

Doc is creating an entire series of artwork to go along with the show that will be hung in the gallery of Mission Comics for just one weekend. We need folks to come and fill the space between 6 and 8pm. As thanks for helping out, Doc will give art out to everyone who attends. This art will PROBABLY be copies of Doc’s newest 24hr Comic Book “Space” as well as free copies of his new album.

The comic shop is at 3520 20th Street, just West of Mission. Stop by. It’s never a dull time when Doc Pop’s at the wheel.

Here’s a preview of the song, made on an iPhone!

The Old Academy of Science

Remember this place? Everybody’s all gaga about the new one, but I lament that youth of today, on their field trips, won’t get to eat lunch with their buds in that central fountain courtyard.

I remember one of my classmates bought an Aerobie Orbiter at the gift shop, and we all watched in horror as he started flinging it right there in the courtyard. We were sure it’d be on the roof in seconds flat, but somehow it never happened. He managed several epic orbits before a security matron shut him down with a big “NO BOOMERANGS!” We went back to our carrots and juice.

On a later trip, I was a 7th grader, but somehow I’d managed to make friends with our class’ 8th-grade T.A., and I ditched some dumb tour to hang out with her in the courtyard and talk about skateboarding and Primus. That was cool.

(I was cleaning up my desktop just now and found this screenshot I took a few years back.)

Dolores Park Pizza Tossing Champion

I mean, nobody else was in the running really, so he kind of wins by default, right?

Fear and Loathing and Cats

If you’re headed to the Alternative Press Expo this weekend, be sure stop by the Pigeon Press booth and have a visit with Lisa Hanawalt. She is a genius.

Austin-Style Breakfast Tacos

This is what’s up at Heart every weekend. This is what’s up. Austin-style breakfast tacos.

Sure, I saw Bill Murray, and the guy from Fucked Up tried to assault me, but the breakfast tacos still held strong as a top highlight of my trip to Austin.

And these ones, made in San Francisco, are even better. Call me a blasphemer if you want, but they are bomb, and there’s no line for brunch at Heart.

Also, I realize the quality of this picture leaves something to be desired, but I didn’t want to give away the whole experience. This is just a hint. Go see for yourself, if you want.

This Thing

Don’t know what it is, but it’s probably art, and it’s out in the back yard at Fabric8, which is a lot bigger than it looks (I always thought it was just that first little tiny room), and has been hosting a food cart party every Friday for a while. My friend Kristina (who shot the gorgeous photo above) had a pretty bangin’ sweet empanada there last week.

Tonight: Trio Zazi – French Music Via the Netherlands

These Dutch babes will be back at Revolution Cafe tonight. Last time, they were called La Gaîté, now the are Trio Zazi. Perhaps Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates took issue with their old name? Who knows.

They play a blend of French chanson and original compositions. They are also total sweethearts. Show starts at 8:30pm and Gypsy Jazz group Panique will be opening.

Check out this video of them demonstrating their impeccable classical training (while wearing revealing French maid outfits):

See you there!

Better Than Baseball Cards: Jail Bracelets Discarded Near Mission Police Station

Our buddy Cranky Old M.G. has amassed an impressive collection:

I know that if I were a petty criminal, I’d be anxious to get the stink of jail off me too, but perhaps leaving your ID bracelet on the street isn’t wise. You could become a victim of identity theft!

Read on to hear the whole story and view the photo in its entirety.

Leftovers From a 'Hipster Party'

Clearly, the only conclusion that one can come to when finding strange objects on the street is that they came from a “hipster party”. Has anyone seen a “lamenting hipster” walking around? Or perhaps one of our hipster readers knows what happened here.

If so, let Mission Loc@l know.
