A Good Way to Provoke a Response in the Mission Today

MM reader Andy B. has been ready all morning to watch to much-anticipated match between Mexico and France that starts RIGHT NOW:

It was pretty damn hilarious biking down Mission Street this morning, documenting my friend’s rather bold display of patriotisme prior to the Mexico/France World Cup match.  We saw lots of smiles and heard lots of honks and shouts of ¡Viva Mexico!
The angriest remarks were from the Irish.

Amazing!  Not only are you giving the proverbial middle finger to our neighborhood’s robust Latino community, but you’re also delving deep into history to insult the ancestral Irish population as well!  Bonus points!

In case anyone is confused as to why the Irish would have big problems with this, here’s why (complete with harpsichord).

June 17 has never been kind to France:

Pétain, June 17, 1940: “It is with a heavy heart that I say to you today that the fighting must stop.”

Quoting Pétain is just so much win. But now that I think about it, the occupation lost then, and the French team lost. So much less win it seems, now… :-(

So how is the flag waving going now?

I’m suddenly aware of the wise decision I made this morning whilst biking by the Mexican consulate on Folsom to NOT say ALLEZ LES BLEUS!* I think it would have been all in good fun.

This guy has some major couilles**, though! Much better than when I painted my dog in 2006.

*ALLEZ LES BLEUS = I WISH FOR THE FRENCH TEAM TO WIN THE GAME PRETTY PLEASE. I was informed on the “Why You Just Can’t Bring Yourself to Eat at Ti Couz” comment section that speaking French makes you a douche, hence the translation.

Awesome. I think that dude got into it with some Brazilians doing the same thing 4 years ago. Les Bleus could’ve used that guy on the pitch today. Maybe he could’ve woken them up.

  5. This awesome footie fan was out on his BIKE waving the flag and supporting his team – what’s wrong with that?

I can’t wait to share my equally patriotique footage with you as I paraded in my bleus down Market Street today singing in French.

Why so angry at this man? A fan has the right to cheer for his team in the World Cup! It’s all about the sporting event that comes to us once every four years! So please let us root for our team and you can root for yours, for chrissake!

Mexico outplayed France and now France is going home. What’s the big deal? This rivalry seems to be one-sided to me.

Now I’m going to eat some stinky fromage, pop open some Champagne, play musettes on my accordion and ride around on my French Mixte.

    Touché!

    Vive la République!

Dommage que t’ai loupé aujourd’hui sur Market Street ; j’aurais bien chanté un peu !

Despite today’s disappointment, I’m having a fun Coupe!

  6. Frisco – la Coupe n’est pas fini!

    Voici la chanson:

    Allez l’Equipe de France!

I would hardly call today a disappointment. France sucked that’s all, and Mexico played a better game! C’est tout!

Guess I’m still smarting from 2006? D’oh, can’t do vids on my computer, but the title is just so promising, so will check it out later…

  7. @friscolex – Check out my non-victory ride down Market Street here:

You gotta get with the times and find a computer that lets you watch video!
