I thought a good old-fashioned sidewalk sale was happening this morning on Valencia, but Kevin here informed me that he is in fact moving out. I wanted to ask where he was moving to in order to help spread the word, but instead we had the following exchange:
Me: “Heya!”
Kevin: “Why are you taking pictures?”
Me: “I just wanted to ask what was going on here.”
Kevin: “I’m moving. You can’t take pictures! Only assholes take pictures of random people. You’re just a BIIIIIG ASSHOLE”
Me: “You are probably right about that. Later!”
So now I’m not even sure if that was Kevin (fairly certain though–I have heard the word ”diva” used to describe him several times), or if Vertical Clearance is moving on to the big salon in the sky or just to Lower Haight/Hayes Valley. I will have to check out the aftermath on the way back home.
This is probably a tender, vulnerable moment for him, hence his dislike of being photographed (and I concedingly didn’t use any with his face visible). But really, am I a big asshole?
someone has ISS-UES…
good riddance. we will not miss you.
Nope, you’re OK. The biiiiig assholes are the ones who tell you you can’t take pictures when you most definitely CAN.
Suck off a donkey you filthy hamster.
A friend of mine scheduled his first-ever Vertical Clearance appointment for this Tuesday, then called to cancel when he found another place that was open on Mondays.
Kevin’s response, via voicemail:
12:22am, 16 March: “This is Kevin with Vertical Clearance. I’m awfully sorry to call you so late but, um, your message was a little weird. And a little too informative. I don’t know who’s got you calling. I don’t know what’s going on. But unless you heard it from myself, then we’re gonna be here tomorrow. So sorry you had to find something somewhere else. Nice try, homework-wise. I’ll see you.”
You have a clear legal right to take pictures from a sidewalk. This “Kevin” had no reasonable expectation of privacy on a public sidewalk.
I don’t know if that makes you an asshole, but you’re legal, which makes Kevin the asshole in this scenario.
He’s violating the DPW code by not maintaining a 6′ path of travel for pedestrians. How the hell is a blind man supposed to navigate his way through there?
Tell his lame ass to shove it.
He misused the word “random”. I say he can shove it.
Yeah, Kevin is clearly the asshole in this situation.
I thought there was maybe some emergency or something when I passed by this morning.
Asshole for taking pictures? No. Asshole for inconsiderately stacking all of your shit on the sidewalk? Yes.
I saw that this morning on my way to work. My first thought was that he was evicted….if so, that sucks, even for Kevin who does not seem to have a large fan base.
Tried it once. My hair screamed, in every way imaginable. Sorry, but its the truth. Side note: My hair requires great skill in the taming. Its a shrew that way.
I used to get my haircut by him because I lived across the street but I stopped going because the haircuts got progressively worse and I suspected he was totally tweaking out which this story and comments support.
I’m guessing evicted, who moves out like that?
I walked by and was going to take a picture, but I was in a hurry to get to work. I already am kind of an asshole, but I don’t think that confirms it.
Kinda worried about this. My guy went to Demetri to get his hair cut and without a way to contact him, I’m scared it’s going to be early 90s hair drapes all over again.
hey Awwwdrey. email me and i’ll let you and your guy know where ill be next. xo.

to everyone else, i am not a voice for Vertical Clearance, BUT as a person who lives in the neighborhood …. Valencia is changing. the question is “is it for better or for worse?”
it’s sad to see this salon go down in flames. I heard that people were throwing kevin stuff into the streets that morning. I don’t know where they are now, but I hope everyone is healthy and ok cause from the look of things, it doesnt seem very healthy.
nice articleit good
