Anticipated for almost two years and basically eulogized a few months ago, Zaytoon might just be ready to finally do battle with Ali Baba’s Cave (and Truly Med by proxy) for Valencia Mediterranean Wrap supremacy. Let’s see if they can fill the void left by that place that used to be at the Phat Philly spot. Odds on how long they last?
How would folks here generally rate Truly Med against Ali Baba’s Cave? TM is a little closer to my place so I always end up going there but if there’s something I’m missing out on at ABC I should probably take the time to check it out.
It’s not even a contest, Truly Med has the best lamb shawarma i’ve had outside of NYC and the Middle East.
i loved that little french bistro that was there before Zaytoon. sad.
Zaytoon gets 5 stars over at Yelp!

ABC is okay and their hot sauce is terrific, but I agree w/ Kiya, Truly Med’s lamb is great. Good luck to Zaytoon though, I like new places opening up….
speaking of which, the guys/brothers behind the now departed Craig’s Place look like they’ve opened Ebb and Flow, their seafood restaurant… has anyone tried it yet?
i think SF could always use more (other than italian) med & middle eastern choices, so i’m happy to see this.
and yes, i checked out ebb & flow last night. big WIN in my book.
Old Jerusalem. End of thread.

truly med is great. It is serious food. Ali Baba, not so much, it is slop. I have been a patron of truly med since it opened, they all know me there and I like it that way. I’ve watched the younger Latino dudes at truly med grow up making falafel and shawerma. They are always smiling and joking around. It makes me think this is a community place where a guy works for what , 15 or 20 years. Not unlike Lucca. Ali Baba — do they even care about the food they serve? This is a common problem with taquerias, most don’t seem to care to make a decent burrito or taco, just pile on a bunch of stuff without regard to the finished product.
Truly Med is definitely better that ABC, particularly for the lamb. OJ is the place to go if you want to actually sit down and eat your meal — if they served beer I would definitely be there more often.
I used to love Ali Baba’s Cave. I went there almost every week! Then, one day, I was enjoying my meal and the biggest rat I have ever seen crawled out of the “cave.” Several people told the owners who didn’t really seem to care. I just….I can’t eat there anymore. SO I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL ZAYTOON OPENS!!!
Zaytoon has opened!
