Mission Throwback, 1998: Punks in Swim Trunks

Photographer Karoline Collins this morning took us back in time to the summer of 1998 and some kind of punk picnic in which a bunch of Mission kids piled into a van and went up north somewhere to catch some rays and have a swim.

“This is the first time I can remember seeing lots of punk rockers in bathing suits,” says the photographer. It’s a rare sight, right? Happy Friday!!

Sure, 1998 San Francisco. But “punk rockers”? The chick has a ruffled swimsuit… the white guy has dreads (IMO there are few things worse than white guys with dreads). It’s a fine picture, but punk rockers they are not.

I too have some pictures of puck rockers at a weekend punk get-away at someone’s farm that involved bands and swimming holes (i.e. bathing suits).

I also have have pictures of mods and scooterists at a weekend camping trip at big sur that also involved swimming and bathing suits. May I divulge that the mods had it all over the punx when it came to looking hott in bathing gear. Perhaps it had something to do with all the nasty processed soy products that comprise most punx diets–but the large amounts of lumpy, pallid punk rocker flesh was nearly universal amongst that particular subculture.

      Pics or it didn’t happen.

Touche, Allan. I’ll have to high-tail it on over to Kinko’s sometime this week to scan my pix from that 1990 trip during which the mods and scooterists from the Santa Cruz Scooter Club joined up with the S.H.A.R.P. skins from the Centurions for a weekender ride down to Big Sur for camping, hiking up and floating down the Big Sur River, and copious boozing.

Perhaps you’ll make do with a demure pic of yours truly in career gear on her prized 1978 Rally 200 while I gather the requested photos of hot mod and skin girls and boys from the late 80s/early 90s in their skivvies.

OMG Thats: (not going to say her name) that used to live on Albion. OH My those where the days. VERY PRODUCTIVE… Now that I think about it we had sex in a tent one time on one of those mass out-of-town outings. She is more punk and DIY than most “punks” for sure. Man, I go way back in this hood. Thats why I call me the OG. Survivalistologymutherfunky. Thank god for rent control or the real crackers would take over.
PS-what is she doing now? Electrician? Thanks for the memories… I love it.

Hey, I don’t mind that you ripped my photo off of flickr, but I would appreciate it if you could use my real name for the photo credit.

Tracy: Just because they had funny vintage swim suits doesn’t mean they aren’t punk rockers. Did you spend much time in the Mission punk scene in the late 90′s? There were plenty of punks who didn’t fit into any standard mode of ‘punk’ fashion.

    Thanks,
    Karoline Collins

Lotsa caucasian punks in the east bay rock the shitwig.
    Hmm…maybe “rock” isn’t the right verb….
