Ariel just got a fun email from his mom (that’s right, his mom):
Waiting to cross at Valencia on 16th heading east, a guy pulls up on a bicycle, sprays a dark green dot over some other colors on the curb over the sewer, and then dropped a 2″ X 1″ filled (don’t know with what) baggy into the sewer. A middle ageish white guy with a vest with day glow stripes. Who dat? What’s he up to? On my way, I noticed all the sewer curbs had dark green dots over other colors. So very curious.
(Emphasis mine.) Thanks, Ariel! Thanks, Ariel’s mom! Link.

Probably mosquito control – a lot of municipalities are hiring people to drop things into sewer grates to combat the spread of West Nile.
I’m always wondering what all those spray paint color dots above the sewer grates are.
It is mosquito control. I’ve seen some with four different color dots on them.
i would love to hear my mom SAY “who dat?”, much less email it. much less stroll at her own accord east on 16th @ valencia.
then again, it would all be pretty disturbing.
ariel’s lucky to have a down mom.
Thanks, that’ll make her Mother’s Day.
Kids, the definition of a ‘down’ mom, is YOUR mom, ingrates. Tell the woman you love her tomorrow and leave the rest to God.
this is an excellent point, and i was totally not trying to set up a mom vs. mom situation.
“Tell the woman you love her tomorrow and leave the rest to God” is a great suggestion.
and i would add, ANY woman who might have done you a good turn, shown you a good path or made your day brighter…give her a thought tomorrow.
Just wanted to add my mom’s response:
”
I think it is for mosquitos, there’s a website I found that’s for alternative to pesticides in general, and the mosquito problem is addressed. Reference to green dot in the contact numbers.

Now I’m wondering what the other colors are for.

hi, it’s called “mosquito abatement” not “mosquito control.” i am on the team, there’s about nine of us right now, and we work for a private company, Pestec, who has a contract with the city.
each color represents the current round of treatment. with a team of 7-9 Mosquito Abatement Couriers (MACs) it takes about three weeks to cover the entire city. From around March to October we do approximately 12 rounds. we mark the curb so that we know what has been treated that round, and also so the next MAC who does that neighborhood will know which catchment basins were missed the previous round.
Haha! Just this week I saw a pair of Pestec trucks sitting in traffic down by the ballpark. I said I thought the ladybug logos odd, for as a Californian I don’t think of ladybugs as pests, but the Michigander I was with set me straight, saying that just the other day she was on the phone with her mom, and Mom goes, “Egad, I’m fighting a swarm of ladybugs trying to invade the kitchen!” Knock ‘em dead, Pestec.
errrrr, ladybugs (aka lady beetles) are your friends, they want to help you. Aphids are bad news, but the ladybug is their mortal enemy. And the larvae kick ass, NOM NOM NOM:
“Watch for the little alligator-like lady beetle larvae too. They’re charcoal gray with orange markings. If you see them, you know the lady beetles are breeding in your garden. And this is good, because the larvae can eat 100 aphids in an hour, compared to the 100 a day an adult lady beetle can eat. Big difference!”
