Max over at 4Q Conditioning today published a remembrance of San Francisco’s own Mr. Ben Davis, including this shot of the mustachioed signage outside the Arik’s at the corner of Mission and Valencia. Max begins:
black bens, grey bens, dark green bens,
cut-off bens for shorts….
part of the costume for many years.
Link. Taker easy, Ben!
R.I.P., Ben.
The Davis family is responsible for most of the fashion keepin’-it-real in S.F.: basically, Ben’s grandfather Jacob, an immigrant from Riga, Latvia in the 1800s, invented Levi’s (rivets and all), and made them for Mr. Strauss. The Ben’s workshirt/Levi’s jeans combo is an emblem of an historic S.F. family relationship.
Svieks, Ben and Jacob.
