It wasn’t so much an argument as several pieces of information:
- Reiterated (twice) that they will accept the community’s decision, though he wanted to make sure people understood what AA was
- Explained AA and the whole “vertically integrated manufacturing” model
- Mentioned that they wanted to open in the Mission because none of their other stores were BART-accessible[*], and that they had discovered that a lot of people from the Mission wore the clothes (heh)
- Shared a selection of threats, insults, etc that had been emailed to them. Called out StopAA for not bothering to ask about their actual plans for the space until a couple days ago. Called out Chicken John (bizarrely) for saying they were “full of shit”.
- Noted that they were paying market price for rent, “not $9000 a month or whatever else is being said.” Observed that due to the number of vacancies on Valencia St, businesses currently have a lot of leverage over landlords, rather than the other way around.
[*] I think he said BART? A woman (the retired paramedic) got up a few minutes later and said she wanted to correct him, that all of the stores were accessible via public transportation. Unfortunately, I don’t actually remember if he said they were “BART-acessible” or “accessible via public transportation”. Either way. If the woman was actually taking the position that all modes of public transit in SF are equally good, then I must respectfully disagree.
There’s a guy up there right now bitching about how he lives next to Ritual and they pollute the air from their roaster.
A word about this guy: I’m pretty sure the store has some sort of restraining order against him; at least, that’s what one of the baristas told me. He used to wander into the cafe and scream about the smell from the roasting. Now he can only come halfway across Valencia St, so he will occasionally stand in the middle of the street and shout in Ritual’s general direction.
he said “accessible by bart or public transportation.”
chicken john was right, they clearly were full of shit, and that bullshit about the nonsense threats they received (not to mention claiming the opposition was somehow anti-immigrant) made that pretty clear.
AA rep (Ryan) just finished speaking. Public comment about to start at 2 minutes per pop.
My video feed is flaky — what was his argument? And what was the bus comment?
disregard, just saw allan’s post.
man, the anti-LA rhetoric is thick.
bet this is the first time “tookas” has been uttered in from of the commission.

Number 1, engage the hilarity drive.
