Breaking News: Organic Aisle Now at South Van Ness IGA

Nick writes:

Hey Guys,

Exciting times! Looks like IGA Delano’s on VanNess @ 23rd is spicing things up with an Organic aisle, aisle 6. Now you can feast on Annie’s Organic cracker snacks with out having to go all the way to Wholefoods.

Go Mission

Perhaps this will be th next thing to be protested.

The “struggle” to keep over processed, low nutrient, high sugar, chemical filled foods in neighborhoods with racially and economically diverse populations.

    The nutritional eqquivalent of blight.

  2. Zinzin says:

All that said, good for those guys. They have their eyes open on terms of who lives in the hood.

    Diverse being the operative word.

My partner and I shop at Delano’s regularly. The staff are friendly, very accommodating to help out a disabled shopper, and their deli sandwiches on sourdough rolls are HUGE. Yummmmmmmy. I was happy to see them painting their outside and rearranging a little a few weeks back when there was nothing but financial gloom in the news.

  4. Zinzin says:

Almost everyone that works there lives on the hood too.

    Truly a local business.

    Also, a chain I believe.

We shop that store multiple times a week.

    So should y’all.

I can’t stand to shop at Delano’s, for anything more than an emergency run (they’re a few blocks from my place) simply because of the enormous vacant parking lot, where they tow anyone who’s there more than an hour. I think it’s such a waste of space. They could let people park there, or even, hey, RENT out the parking. Or they could convert some of the space to an outdoor eating area. Or freakin’ sell it to someone who’ll use it. Something. There’s never more than 10 cars in that whole block-spanning lot.

This comment has nothing to do with the Organic section, really. Sorry.

i think those are good points, but until recently, this was operated like a crappy super in a bad neighborhood. neither was true, but that’s how they ran it.

now they;re trying to do some good stuff. be more than a crappy super in a bad hood.

maybe if folks started to shop there more, and brought the store into the fold of the community, they’d be open to some of the ideas you’re proposing.

the lot is pretty bad, no doubt. but if they dont tow and act protective, it will quickly become a magnet or camping, drug deals, etc etc. it;s still the mission, right? (all this crap happens overnight anyways).

point is, they;re TRYING to do somethign good, my vote is let;s support them and bring the ideas to them. who knows what can happen?

I remember reading on some SF blog, it might have even been this one, that Zipcar approached the owners of Delano’s to see if they could rent some parking spots but were turned down. That’s probably just hearsay, but renting to Zipcar or City Car Share would be an excellent idea for all those parking spots.

And back to the actual topic, I’ll go check out their Organic section this weekend since I live nearby.

I’m all for Delano’s improving their store and making it nicer, but the reason no one shops there is that the prices are ridiculously high. I wanted to like this store and shop their regularly, because it is only one block away from my house, but I would go broke if I bought all my groceries there. It’s a liquor store with an unusually large food selection as far as I’m concerned.

I’m glad to see the experimenting with natural/organic products. It is across the street so I am bound to go there occasionally. They have most of the problems of large chains, wasteful bag usage, excessive lighting, over-packaged products from across the globe, but they seem to be working on most of these, at least as much or more than other similar stores.

When I first saw the new organics isle I was concerned that the effort would be sustainable. Not just Annie’s mac and cheese but several other brands too, and multiple varieties along with seven or so brands of organic popcorn. It seemed a little overboard. I noticed the rapid reduction in the array of bulk offerings in the same isle – maybe too much at first?

In any case, I hope they find the right balance and continue to offer organic food, in an environment with real classics to dance to.. From responsible companies and at more competitive prices would be good too.

My family shops there by default. I work and live in the hood and it’s in between – ie walking distance.
They are all nice and every time we go in, there’s some kind of improvement. We’re sort of into European style food and organic stuff so we like the change. It has become pretty expensive but you can still buy 50lbs of rice and a palette of beans for next to nothing.

It’s weird that they don’t carry dental floss among other things.

  11. zinzin says:

no dental floss in that area up front? up against the front wall is a section of drugstore type stuff. easily shoplifted, i guess.
